Tercer Domingo de Adviento / Third Sunday of Advent
Juan el Bautista era de carácter firme en su modo de vivir y en mantenerse en la Verdad, lo cual le costó su encarcelamiento y martirio. Aún en la cárcel habla eficazmente con Herodes. Juan nos enseña a compaginar la firmeza de carácter con la humildad: “No soy digno de desatarle las sandalias” (Jn 1,27); “Es preciso que Él crezca y que yo disminuya” (Jn 3,30); se alegra de que Jesucristo bautice más que él, pues se considera sólo “amigo del esposo” (Jn 3,26).
En una palabra: Juan nos enseña a tomar en serio nuestra misión en la tierra: ser cristianos coherentes, que se saben y actúan como hijos de Dios. Debemos preguntarnos: —¿Cómo se prepararían María y José para el nacimiento de Jesucristo? ¿Cómo preparó Juan las enseñanzas de Jesús? ¿Cómo nos preparamos nosotros para conmemorarlo y para la segunda venida del Señor al final de los tiempos? Pues, como decía san Cirilo de Jerusalén: “Nosotros anunciamos la venida de Cristo, no sólo la primera, sino también la segunda, mucho más gloriosa que aquélla. Pues aquélla estuvo impregnada por el sufrimiento, pero la segunda traerá la diadema de la divina gloria”.

John the Baptist was a man of firm character—both in his way of life and in his fidelity to the Truth—which cost him imprisonment and martyrdom. Even from prison, he speaks effectively to Herod. John teaches us how to unite firmness of character with humility: “The one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie” (Jn 1:27); “He must increase; I must decrease” (Jn 3:30). He rejoices that Jesus baptizes more people than he does, for he considers himself only the best man” (Jn 3:26).
In a word, John teaches us to take our mission on earth seriously — to be coherent Christians who know and act as children of God. We must ask ourselves: How would Mary and Joseph have prepared for the birth of Jesus Christ? How did John prepare the teaching of Jesus? How do we prepare to commemorate His birth and to welcome His second coming at the end of time? For, as Saint Cyril of Jerusalem said: “We preach not one advent only of Christ, but a second also, far more glorious than the former. For the former gave a view of His patience, but the latter brings with it the crown of a divine kingdom.”
